Perhaps you’ve been neglecting a good oral health routine. Or, you’ve done your best, but you’ve developed plaque and tartar buildup. A regular routine of twice-daily tooth brushing and daily flossing is an important part of regular plaque removal for everyone. But if you have risk factors that have caused a buildup of plaque on your teeth and gums to harden into tartar, your dentist or dental hygienist may suggest scaling or root planing your teeth to remove the buildup. If left untreated, severe tartar buildup along and under the gum line can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, which may increase the risk of gum disease.
Scaling and root planing are common nonsurgical techniques that may prevent the need for more serious procedures, such as periodontal surgery or a root canal.
Here’s what to expect if your dentist or dental hygienist recommends these techniques:
- You won’t feel it. You’ll receive a local anesthetic to numb the area.
- Scaling: Your dentist or dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar from the areas both above and below the gum line.
- Root Planing: Your dentist or dental hygienist uses special tools to smooth rough spots on the tooth roots. This process not only removes bacteria and helps reduce plaque buildup, but it provides a smooth surface for gums to reattach to the teeth.
After a scaling and root planing procedure, be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions and maintain an oral care routine of twice-daily tooth brushing and daily flossing. If your gums are sensitive after the procedure, try a spongy floss, such as Oral-B® Ultra Floss®, to help prevent painful flossing.

Mark Madden, DDS, makes it a top priority to treat you as an individual and to get to know you and your family personally. He earned his dental degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry in 1988 and served as a member of the school’s clinical staff from 1988–99. He currently serves as part of the Minnesota Vikings medical staff, providing oral screenings for the Vikings as they enter training camp.
Dr. Madden is dedicated to keeping up to date on the latest advancements in dentistry through continuing education courses. He is passionate about using new technology to improve the comfort and quality of dentistry for you and your family. With the help of today’s digital x-rays, 3D imaging, intra-oral camera, CERECTM one-visit crowns, lasers, and implants, Dr. Madden can provide dental care that is more accurate, more comfortable, and less invasive than ever before.
A Fellow in the International College of Oral Implantology, Dr. Madden also belongs to the American and Minnesota Dental Associations as well as the local Lions Club. He is very proud of his two children, and in his spare time he enjoys reading, attending continuing education programs, fishing, hunting, traveling, and training his dog.
Timothy Roth, DDS, 
also earned his dental degree from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, after graduating from St. John’s University. He then completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency in the U.S. Navy and has since taken numerous postgraduate education courses, specifically selecting courses focusing on CAD/CAM dentistry that allows him to provide highly esthetic same-day restorations for patients with missing or damaged teeth. He also has recent training in oral surgery, especially third molar extractions, and is dedicated to providing his patients with healthy, beautiful smiles for life. His commitment to lifelong education means he is constantly evaluating emerging dental methods and technologies in order to provide his patients with the best results in the least invasive manner with a high emphasis on comfort. This commitment ensures the highest level of care, both today and tomorrow.
Dr. Roth and his wife Julie have one beautiful son. He serves the community through his membership in the Delano American Legion and the Delano Sons of the American Legion, and maintains professional memberships in the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry. In his spare time, he enjoys being outdoors, woodworking, hunting, reading, and spending time with his family.
